A Note to Readers

The report begins with the U.S. Drought monitor maps of the West and California.

This remainder of the report has a rather narrow focus. Two general topics are covered:

First, the extent and impact of the drought that now covers most of the nation. From the Mississippi River to California, the ongoing drought is expected to continue through this coming winter. Articles provided include details of the impact on the central states and rivers, with dramatic photos of dried up rivers included.

Second is coverage of the Colorado River crisis. Again the forecast is that the third year of La Nina means no relief from the continued decline of the river’s flow. In addition, with a deadline looming for the states to come to some agreement on cutting the withdraws from the river by two to four million acre feet annually beginning January, 2023, denunciations by water managers in regard to other states has erupted in recent weeks. It is more and more looking like that the Bureau of Reclamation may have to step in and force the cutbacks required.
